How it works

What the profit and loss calculator does

P/L = (exit price - entry price) x direction x units x multiplier

Direction is 1 for a long and -1 for a short. Everything is worked out in the currency the instrument is quoted in and converted to your account currency once, at the end.

Example

A worked example

  1. 01Long 0.50 lots of EURUSD from 1.0850, closed at 1.0920.
  2. 020.50 lots is 50,000 units.
  3. 031.0920 - 1.0850 = 0.0070 of price movement.
  4. 040.0070 x 50,000 = $350.
Questions

Worth knowing

Does this include spread, swap and commission?
It answers the price question only. Enter your real fill prices rather than the levels you planned and the spread is already inside the answer. Commission and overnight swap sit outside it.
How do I work out a short?
Set the direction to short and enter the prices as they happened. Selling higher than you buy back returns a profit, and the calculator handles the sign for you.
Why does my platform show a slightly different figure?
Usually the conversion rate. A trade in a pair not quoted in your account currency is converted at the moment it closes, and any reference rate used here is close to that rather than identical to it.

The calculation is the easy half

Sizing a trade correctly once is arithmetic. Doing it on every trade, then being able to look back and see whether it made you any money, is the part that needs a journal. DT Terminal verifies the trades your broker sends on Pro and shows you whether the sizing paid.
