VIX questions

VIX is a volatility index: a measure of how much movement traders expect in large US stocks over the next 30 days, read from option prices. It tends to rise when stocks fall sharply.

Each broker quotes its own bid and ask from its own liquidity providers, so prices can differ a little from broker to broker. The prices here are indicative bid quotes. Some brokers quote the cash index and others the futures, which trade at a slightly different level. Spreads also widen around big news and when the market opens.

Most brokers quote VIX nearly 24 hours a day on weekdays, with a short daily break, because the price follows the index futures. It moves most while its home stock market is open.

Contract sizes for VIX differ from broker to broker. Your broker's contract specification shows how much one lot is and what a one point move is worth per lot, so check it before you size a trade.
