How it works

`point value = units x contract multiplier`

`pip value = point value x pip size`

Units means lots multiplied by the lot size for anything traded in lots, and the plain contract or coin count for everything else. Futures use their tick size in place of a pip, and indices move in whole points.

A worked example

1. One standard lot of EURUSD is 100,000 units.
2. A full 1.0000 move on that size is worth $100,000.
3. A pip on EURUSD is 0.0001 of that move.
4. $100,000 x 0.0001 = $10 per pip.

## Worth knowing

### What is a pip?

The conventional price step for the instrument. On most currency pairs that is 0.0001, on yen pairs 0.01, and on gold $0.10, so a $1 move in gold is 10 pips and one pip on a standard lot of XAUUSD is worth $10. Futures quote in ticks instead, and indices in points, so the calculator switches to whichever unit the instrument really uses.

### Why is my pip value not a round number?

Because the pair is not quoted in your account currency. A pip on USDJPY is worth a fixed number of yen, and what that is worth to you moves with the exchange rate.

### Does pip value change as price moves?

For a pair quoted in your account currency, no. For anything else it drifts with the cross rate, which is why the same stop can cost slightly different amounts on two identical trades.
